[Webinar] Inclusive education and environmental justice: unpacking inequality, power, lessons and emergency contexts

Date: 22 April 2026.

Time: 4-5pm UTC.

Platform: Zoom.

Organised by: Centre de Recherche Interuniversitaire sure la Formation et la Profession Enseignante.

The issues of inclusive education and climate change/environmental protection are intrinsically linked. In this presentation, Ayman Qwaider will unpick some of the connections. When we dig into the root causes, we see that the exclusion of learners from and within education is largely driven by discrimination and inequality. Discrimination and inequality are, in turn, the results of individuals and systems prioritizing their desire for power over others (for instance, in the form of status, wealth, and controlling access to resources and decision-making) rather than supporting the empowerment of everyone. The same power-based drivers of inequality that divide and suppress education opportunities also drive the destruction of our environment. Those of us working to promote inclusive education and address climate change are striving to change the attitudes and behaviours of a shared foe. This presentation will draw on current examples, primarily in conflict and emergency contexts, to summarise key connections between the denial of educational rights for all and the destruction of the environment. Ayman will illustrate why we cannot work on one in isolation of the other.
