Inclusive Learning Approach is an innovative approach to inclusive education.
Watch a short video that introduces the Inclusive Learning Approach.
Background
To achieve inclusive education we must change education policies, resources, teaching practices, stakeholder attitudes and learning environments. Educators involved in developing the Inclusive Learning Approach (ILA) analysed decades of global research and practical experience to understand how to facilitate these changes more effectively.
ILA draws on previous work by many organisations, including Enabling Education Network and the Norwegian Association of Disabled. It has recently been used within the Together for Inclusion programme – a consortium of Norwegian NGOs, organisations of persons with disabilities (OPDs) and other partners.
ILA components
ILA consists of the Inclusive Advocacy Component and the Inclusive Teaching Component.
The approach was only given the formal name ILA in the last few years. Keen followers of our website may recall reading about the “participatory development of teacher training” project (now called the Inclusive Teaching Component) and the “OPD capacity building project” (now called the Inclusive Advocacy Component).
The Inclusive Teaching Component supports the in-service and pre-service training of mainstream teachers on inclusive pedagogy. The Inclusive Advocacy Component helps OPDs become stronger advocates and advisors for inclusive education. The two components complement each other and ideally will be used together.
In both components, the training is adapted to each context through co-development with local teacher trainers and OPDs.
The Inclusive Advocacy Component has so far been adapted and used in Somalia, Uganda, Zambia and Zanzibar.
The Inclusive Teaching Component has also been adapted and used in these countries, plus Ethiopia, Iraq and Mozambique.
