Index for Inclusion in the Arabic World
"Regular schools with an inclusive orientation are the most effective means of combating discriminatory attitudes, creating welcoming communities, building an inclusive society and achieving education for all." Unesco, 1994
The Iindex for inclusion in the Arabic World is a set of materials to help guide schools and other centres through the process of inclusive school development. It helps schools identify and reduce barriers to learning and participation. The Arabic language Index has been developed in selected schools and centres of learning across the ARab region over the last year. Now, Save the Children present the Index for Inclusion in the Arab World as a major contribution to improving the quality of education experianced by al our children, by helping schools and communities to help themselves.
The Index encourages self review by schools and pre-schools and other centres of learning, to help them investigate their cultures, policies and practices. Centres are then able to create new priorities for development and promote learning and participation in these aras.
The process builds on existing good practice, and a wide scrutiny of everything that makes up a school or centre's activities. The first section of the Index provides more than 40 indicators of inclusion, which are further linked to over 500 questions about the detail of school life. The following section provides a background to inclusive ideas, and then outlines a process for self analysis and improvement that schools and centres can follow. The Index for Inclusion in the Arabic World includes questionnaires which can be used to engage children, families and the community in the inclusion process.
The Index for Inclusion in English was written by Mel Ainscow and Tony Booth, and published by the Centre for Studies in Inclusive Education. Index for Inclusion in the Arabic World is presented in photocopiable loose leaf binder. 126 pages. Publisher: Save the Children, London ISBN pending $20 (+p&p). Arabic.
