Children, Disability and Development: Achievement and Challenge

A Save the Children Fund global seminar to learn from experience and maximise impact - Extract from Conference Report - April 13th - 22nd 1994

Session 6 - Community Participation

Facilitators: Pam Zinkin and Mamonyane Mohale

Summary:
This session began with a role play demonstrating some of the pitfalls of certain interpretations of 'community participation'. Participants' experiences of community participation included:

Positive experiences: identification of real needs and real solutions, appropriate levels of responsibility, appropriate use of local resources, sustainability, empowerment and self-esteem, attitude-change and acceptance of disability, government acceptance and foreigners' withdrawal.

Negative experiences: differing needs leading to conflict, very time-consuming, tokenism, role of foreign experts and academics, lack of feedback following research and evaluation.
