Lesotho Society of Mentally Handicapped Persons
This Manual describes a one-week training course to prepare parents as trainers. It was developed and carried out in Lesotho in May, 1997 with 30 participants and support from NFPU, Norway. The manual is intended as guide to other people wishing to carry out a similar course. Accompanying reports will give details of the workshop evaluation and the training subsequently undertaken by the participants.
Follow-up Report on the May 1997 Workshop
This Manual describes the procedures used to identify the impact which the Parents as Trainers workshop had in the 12 months following its presentation and the results obtained. This is done in terms of the training events organised by the workshop participants, the reported outcomes of the training and indicators of sustainability of this approach to training. In addition, recommendations are made for future actions based on the results of the follow-up evaluation.
An Evaluation of the Parents as Trainers Workshop
The results of the evaluation are presented here while accompanying booklets describes the format and content of the workshop; and give the outcomes of a training needs analysis. This information will help to inform planners of training workshops about evaluation methods as well as giving an insight into the features of the workshop which participants find most useful.

It is designed to be used in the training of professional workers in the field of disability - therapists, teachers, nurses and CBR workers.

This booklet outlines a process which can be used with parent groups to assist them in clarifying their aspirations and to engage in action planning. This process can be used with small local groups as well as regional or national groupings.

This booklet summarises the results obtained with nearly 70 parents in Lesotho who have a child with a disability. It outlines parents' wishes for their child and for themselves; what they have done to try to make the wishes come true and what more they feel needs to be done.
An Analysis of Parents' Training Needs
This booklet presents the results of a training needs analysis which was undertaken at the outset of the 'Parents as Trainers' workshop in Lesotho. This analysis covers the perceived needs of parents wishing to act as tutors as well as the participants' perceptions of the training needs of other parents and professionals in their locality and how they planned to respond to them. This information may be helpful to other National Associations wishing to undertake training.
