Introduction

The Index for Inclusion is a set of materials to help schools reduce barriers to learning and participation for all children and young people. It also helps schools develop themselves in a way that values all students equally.

The Index was written by Tony Booth and Mel Ainscow. It is published in the UK by the Centre for Studies on Inclusive Education. This is an independent NGO and educational charity promoting inclusive Education for All, which encompasses a concern to end segregated schooling for disabled children.

The Index materials guide schools through an inclusive process of development that draws on the knowledge and experience of staff, children and young people and their families. The materials encourage a self-review of school cultures, policies and practices. To do this they use a planning framework and a set of indicators and questions that involve detailed engagement with all aspects of a school in classrooms, playgrounds and staff rooms. Through this process, priorities for development are determined and plans for inclusive change are put into action by the school.

In 2004 the Index authors adapted the English schools edition for use in early years and childcare settings in the UK. This edition is also published by CSIE (see www.csie.org.uk). It was then updated (in 2006 by Booth, Ainscow and Kingston) with a CD-Rom to make access easier in early years and childcare settings.

As soon as the Index was launched by CSIE in 2000, the British Government placed the document in every school and local education authority in England. Later the Welsh Assembly did the same for Wales. Translations and adaptations of the Index began with Norway in 2000, and the number has grown regularly ever since.

The two UK English editions (2002 for schools and 2006 for early years and childcare) are not available to download from this website. They can be purchased from CSIE (see www.csieshopping.com).
