M.Ed./Diploma in Inclusive Education

This M.Ed. programme provides students with the opportunity to engage critically with theory, research and practice in the field of special and inclusive education. The programme deliberately sets out to explore a range of different perspectives. Students have opportunities to observe school practice and to carry out their own research projects in schools. In this way the programme addresses global issues of inclusion, while at the same time enabling students to engage with, and study, the ways in which governments, local authorities, schools and local communities can reduce barriers to participation and learning for all children. Students have included: teachers, deputy head teachers, education advisers, parents and teaching assistants.

Entry Requirements: Ideally, applicants will be graduates of an approved university and have an approved teaching qualification. However applicants with other relevant experience of working in education are encouraged to apply.

People Potential: Workshops for Active Learning and Play

People Potential (based in Hampshire, UK) runs short courses on the design of educational materials. See www.peoplepotential.org.uk for details.

We all use tools to enhance our lives and make daily living tasks easier. These ‘tools’ range from knives for preparing food to soap for washing ourselves. Similarly ‘tools’ can enhance a child’s learning process. We could probably manage to cut bread with a penknife, but would cut a far neater slice with a bread knife. It is important that tools are designed for a specific purpose. Teaching tools should also be specially designed for their intended purpose. The inclusion of disabled children in mainstream schools or kindergartens gives a new impetus to designing materials to meet the needs of all learners and this often leads to better classroom management.

Teaching materials, games and toys designed at People Potential workshops reflect local interests and cultural values, and are therefore different from commercial products. Creative solutions are more easily found when looking at the problem through many different eyes. Designing in a group is highly recommended because new ideas are created, useful material produced and everyone has fun!

International Conference for Sign Language Interpreters

This conference will be unique in its endeavour to bring together Sign Language interpreters from across the world. Organisers are interested in obtaining papers which reflect the breadth and variety of interpreting experience, and in sharing new thoughts on interpreter training. Abstracts (in Word for Windows format) should be submitted by 4 April 2005. They should be a minimum of 100 and no more than 300 words, and be accompanied by the author’s contact details and short biography. Full papers will only be required after acceptance of an abstract and not to be more than 3000 words, including references. Submission date will be no later than 4 th July 2005.

Disability: A Global Perspective on Rights to Education and Livelihoods

Inclusion Week

November 11-15, 2002

There is to be an Inclusion Week held across the whole of the UK in November 2002 with the invitation to all overseas countries to join in and arrange events at the same time which promote inclusion. The theme of the week is breaking down barriers to learning and participation, as well as developing and celebrating inclusion. The week is being organised by the Centre for Studies on Inclusive Education (CSIE) in the UK as part of its 20th anniversary.

CSIE will put on a few events and is inviting people to arrange their own events which will then be publicised in a CSIE magazine and on a website. The central aim of the week is to highlight the importance of building inclusive schools. While many exclusionary pressures exist in education and elsewhere, much progress has been made with inclusion in recent years and this should be acknowledged.

The event is open for anyone to take part in, if they support inclusion as an essential part of building a better and more just society. CSIE hopes the week will encourage guarantees of support for developing inclusive education in schools and elsewhere.

What does the South Really Want from the North? : An EENET & Deaf Africa Fund seminar

This seminar is a follow-up to two previous seminars organised by EENET at the University of Manchester. The seminars focused on the particular challenge of including deaf children in education in southern countries. See reports for more details.

The world wide right to education of children with a disability: How to proceed? (The Netherlands)

This was the title of a seminar organised by the Dutch Coalition on Disability and Development and the Instituut vor Dooven (Institute for the Deaf) on 24th May 2002. The seminar was attended by 50 participants. Susie Miles gave a presentation which drew on EENET's experience, and case studies were presented about Vietnam, India and Russia.

The report lists a number of action points under the heading 'Getting disability into education for all'. They are divided into action which needs to be taken at the donor level, and action at the school level.

Learning from Difference : an EENET seminar

Foz do Arelho, Portugal : May 21-22, 2002

EENET invites education practitioners to attend a 2 day seminar in Portugal in May 2002. The aim is to explore ways of sharing international experiences regarding initiatives to encourage the development of inclusive education.

There will be a range of activities at the seminar : a small number of presentations from the major regions in the world and in-depth debates about difference and diversity and the future of inclusive education. It will be an opportunity to share experiences and explore ways of extending the coverage of EENET's network.

We are unfortunately unable to cover the costs of flights to and from Portugal, but all travel costs in Portugal will be covered. Some funds will be available to subsidise the accommodation costs for a small number of participants.

There will be limited space at the seminar - 15 places altogether. Please get in touch with EENET's coordinator if you are interested in attending. You should mention your particular involvement in education and networking, and the country and region in which you are working.

Namibia - A National Workshop on Inclusive Education In Teacher Training was held in Windhoek, in August 2001.

It was funded by The Association for Children with Language, Speech and Hearing Impairments of Namibia (CLaSH), UNESCO and the Namibia National Commission for UNESCO.

The purpose of the workshop was to assess the status of inclusive education in Namibia; to develop a common understanding of inclusive education in the Namibian context; to discuss the integration of inclusive education principles into the curricula of teacher education programmes; to consider ways of implementing these principles in practice at school level.
